Obsession involves the fixed idea that takes us back to a drug or a behavior, in an effort to recapture the ease and comfort we once knew. Obsessive and compulsive behaviour begins as a way of escaping or easing pain. It is the obsessive nature of addiction that is certainly not limited to alcohol or other drugs. Any manner of behavior can be a substitute. Due to lack of emotional crisis management we may substitute by/with gambling, sexual promiscuity, compulsive shopping, overeating, undereating, exercise, collections…the list is endless. 

Obsessive compulsive thoughts and actions take up time and energy. An unhealthy habit that is out of control can sabotage a relationship and cause you to make poor decisions that limit your personal growth and ruin the quality of your life. Addictive cycles are cumulative with one stress leading to another. Many people are not able to maintain a healthy, daily routine while trying to manage these distractions. They cause anxiety, depression and even suicidal thoughts when left untreated.
